Prerequisite(s):   None

Corequisite(s):   None

To introduce the fundamental concepts of digital media systems and the Internet as a transport system, the underlying protocols and typical ways of delivering static and dynamic material from a server to a client. To provide the background knowledge of computer and networked systems, their modes of operation, particularly with a digital media web-based future in mind. Material will provide knowledge and understanding of binary based systems, from the numbering systems on which they rely to the ultimate connection with audio and visual media, including aspects of digital coding/decoding.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
This module is taught by a combination of formal lectures, computer based laboratory practical exercises, on-line web-based resources and directed reading. They are supplemented by seminar/tutorials intended to provide reinforcement by direct engagement with taught material and allow for some degree of flexibility in response to student need. Students will also be expected to read and explore a variety of internet and text resources, together with elementary practical work.

Lectures:   20.00          Directed Study:   166.50
Seminars/Tutorials:   6.00          Other:   0.00
Laboratory/Practical:   6.00          Formal Exams:   1.50          Total:   200.00
