To enable students to acquire a sound understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of the management of health and safety in the workplace, the associated legislative framework and their application in the real world.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Concepts, theories and principles explored in formal lectures supported by video presentations and case studies, and practiced in tutorial classes. Practical experience will be enhanced via visiting guest speakers. Cognitive and personal skills developed in open-ended problem solving tutorials, tackled by working in small groups supported by members of academic staff. Oral feedback is given during tutorials. The formal assessment will examine the wider learning outcomes expressed in the descriptor.

Safety technology; occupational health and hygiene; management of health and safety; health and safety law; human factors; risk assessment; hazard operability (HAZOP) study; data management; safe systems of work; theory and practice of inspection; accident investigation; fire safety management; construction, repair and demolition; duty of care; case studies of some notable disasters.
