This module will introduce the main concepts of Information Technology. It will enable you to develop skills in the use of computers, the internet and application software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and database.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Lectures will be used to explain concepts and provide motivation. Interactive tutorial and laboratory sessions supported by e-learning and self-assessment materials will develop the student`s IT skills and experience with software packages. Oral feedback is given during labs and tutorials. The students required to take supplementary assessment have to repair the deficiency in the original assessment.

Outline Syllabus:
Computer Technology: history of computer development, computer hardware: central units, input-output devices, memory, data representation.
Operating Systems: basics of Windows, UNIX and Linux operating systems.
Data Organisation: file system, file types, compression, databases and database managment system.
Number System: integer and floating point data representation, hexadecimal, character (ASCII and Unicode).
Application Software: text-processing, spread-sheets, presentations, database, web page and graphics software.
Data Comunications: basic introduction to protocols, FTP OSI 7-layer, basics of computer networks, client/server model, IP addresses, the internet and inranet.
Computer Security: protection against viruses and other threats.
Legal and Ethical Issues: copyright, privacy and security, accessibility, computer misuse act, data protection act, freedom of information act.
