To review the most commonly used power converter circuits, the control methods used and their field of application. To understand the basic principles of Electrical machines.

Concepts, principles & theories explored in formal lectures, practiced in tutorials & demonstrated in laboratory classes. Practical skills developed in laboratory sessions. Written assessment will assess the application of practical skills to the knowledge base of the module, the formal examination will assess the wider learning outcomes expressed in the descriptor. Supplementary assessment is to repair deficiencies in original submission.

Outline Syllabus:
Power Electronic Circuits:. Diode rectifiers. Linear regulators. Switching characteristics of power devices and gate drives. Single phase and polyphase controlled converters. Basic Chopper circuit. DC-to-DC converters including Buck, Boost, and Buck-Boost converters. DC-AC basic converters - half-bridge, full-bridge.

Transformers, Electro-magnetic actuators, DC machines. Polyphase AC Machine: Synchronous machine. Salient pole and cylindrical rotor types. Principle of torque production. Equivalent circuit and phasor diagram for uniform airgap machine. Induction Machine. Production of fundamental rotating field. Torque/speed characteristics at constant flux Stepper motors. Motor drive principles.
