To enhance and extend previous mathematical knowledge, and the understanding of principles supporting general and electrical engineering themes and to develop concepts facilitating innovative analytical solutions and application of more advanced techniques to treating general and electrical engineering problems.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Theory, calculation methodologies and applications are delivered in large lectures and exercise classes, with practice and general and electrical engineering context established in tutorial groups where oral feedback is given. Discipline skills are assessed in a classroom test (to facilitate written feedback) and the wider learning outcomes of the module are assessed in the final closed-book examination.

Outline Syllabus:
Special functions; Sinc, Bessel, Error and Delta functions.
Functions of more that one variable; Partial derivatives, differentials, small increments, turning points and their classification when applied to general and electrical engineering problems.
Multiple integration, change of order, change to polar coordinates, applications to general and electrical engineering problems.Vector calculus; grad, div, curl and associated formulas. Laplace transforms; Standard transforms, shift theorems, transforms of derivatives and integrals, solution of ODEs including systems, transforms of step, delta and periodic functions, convolution.
Fourier Series; Waves, representation of periodic functions by trigonometric series, half range series, complex form of the Fourier series, solutions of the two dimensional heat and wave equations.
Fourier transforms: periodic transforms, convolution.
General and Electrical Engineering applications and context will be explored at every opportunity.
