To critically analyse power switching devices, the general concept of power switching, gate drives & protection circuitry; examine the application of power switches, in particular in motor drives & switched mode power supplies.

Outline Syllabus:
Device static and dynamic characteristics of solid-state power switches, including thyristor, bipolar & field effect transistors. Limits of usage consideration - ratings, thermal, di/dt, dv/dt. Comparison of device, drive and snubber circuitry. Applications in switch mode power supplies and motor drives. Power converter analysis, ratings, duty cycle, harmonic considerations, open or closed loop control. DC & AC motor drives. Variable frequency inverter operation, control schemes and performances.
