To provide an advanced foundation in satellite communications theory and to present the latest developments and practices in the satellite communications industry.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
The teaching strategy will revolve round formal lectures on the theory and practice of the subject. Seminars will be used to re-enforce the ideas developed through the lectures. Students will be supplied with regular tutorial questions, which will form the basis for the seminars. Students will be encouraged to make use of appropriate web site material to further enhance their awareness and understanding of the subject. The ability to deal systematically with complex issues will be assessed by examination. Supplementary assessment will be as original.

Outline Syllabus:
The module will be based around the following subject areas: Constellations: Orbital Dynamics from Copernicus to Newton; Satellite Orbital Design; Systems and Applications: Mobile Satellite Systems, Networks and Applications including `little` and `big` LEO constellations; Very Small Aperture Terminal Networks; Radio Interface: Link Budget Design from basic transmission theory to advanced link calculations; Digital Modulation Techniques including and Phase Shift Keying; Multiple Access Techniques, covering CDMA, TDMA and FDMA; Regulatory Issues; Mobile and Fixed Propagation Environment including empirical and statistical representations; Network Components: Satellite Payload Design, from transparent to on-board processing architectures; Fixed Earth Station Design; Network Architectures. Satellite systems: Architecture and hardware.
