To develop knowledge and understanding of the theory, techniques and experimental procedures for the mapping and calibration of engine and powertrain managements systems and to apply this knowledge to an experimental part of the course.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
The subject matter is introduced by lectures, seminars from practitioners, and evaluations of hardware. Technical knowledge is consolidated by hands-on project work based on the calibration of an engine management system. Supplementary assessment is to repair deficiency in original submission.

Outline Syllabus:
The delivery of air and fuel in spark-ignition(SI) and compression-ignition(CI) engines. Combustion in SI and CI engines. Effect of engine speed, turbulence and residual gases. Sources of gaseous emissions and particulates. Control of engine-out emissions and after-treatments. Catalytic converters and their operation. Legislative limits and requirements. Engine Management Systems(EMS). Design specification, operating conditions, location and protection. Operational requirements: real time control, mapping and calibration, model based strategies. Fail-safe procedures. Testing of engines: test cells, instrumentation and control. Testing protocols and procedures. Experiment design. Data- logging and presentation. Normalisation of results. Statistical based procedures for obtaining calibration data. Engine modelling, Statistical processes. Model based calibration tool box. Practical project to calibrate a ECU and test the engine.
